Choosing a University

Factors to consider, from admission requirements to in-person visits

Chosing a university can be an overwhelming process as it plays a major role in determining the academic and professional future of the students. Along with academics, the overall university experience plays an important role in shaping the overall personality and outlook of an individual. Therefore, in order to make an informed decision, deciding on a post-secondary institution demands proper consideration and evaluation of a number of factors.

Foremost, you need to decide where your interests lie, how they align with your educational goals, and where the best program is offered to suit those needs. You will also need to check the prerequisites for your program of choice to see whether you qualify for entry or not. Ensure that you have the requisite high school credits and fulfil all other essential criteria of the program.

Certain universities have a cutoff range varying as per the programs being offered, while other universities may use additional criteria, apart from marks, for granting admissions. Furthermore, some may require you to write statements that summarize your hobbies, career plans and abilities.

For certain programs, such as journalism and fine arts, you may even be asked to present a portfolio. You can get all the details about the admission requirements on the website of the university.

Next, ensure that the university is offering the program of your choice. In order to make a better judgment many students try a variety of courses in first-year and subsequently select the area that interests them the most and specialize in that field for the remainder of their university experience.

While learning about the program, you must also find out about the process of switching majors, so that you do not face difficulty should you decide to change your area of interest after the first year. Look at the course outlines offered at different universities to find out about the course components and what you are required to study under a particular program.

One of the most important factors to your university decision is the reputation of the university itself.  Along with the reputation, also consider the programs, facilities and the overall environment of the campus. In order to make an accurate assessment, it is advisable to gain a first-hand experience by visiting the university & interacting with the students. Current students can be your best guide as they will tell you everything that they can about that particular university.

Moreover, along with facilities such as housing, clubs and athletics, the cost associated with attending a university is another major factor. The overall cost includes tuition fees, books, supplies, housing and personal living expenses. This varies depending upon the type of university, its size, location and the chosen program. Make sure to ask about scholarships and financial assistance offered by the university as it can help reduce your tuition

Taking all these factors into consideration can help you make the right decision in choosing the university that best suits you and will help you achieve your educational goals•
