Opting Out of University Packages

Packages may include residence, meal plan and health insurance

Universities offer several packages to their students, such as residence, health insurance and meal plans. While these plans incur heavy expenses, students may not need certain packages, and can opt out to save significant funds. Every university has its own set of guidelines and processes, which the students need to follow in order to opt out of the university packages.

Most universities offer lodging facilities in order to meet the diverse needs of their students, such as the traditional dormitory, apartments, shared-house living, suites or townhouses. Generally the university sends the on-campus housing application to be filled at the time of admission. The first decision, after accepting the offer admission, is therefore whether or not you wish to live on campus.

Certain universities mandate it for all freshmen and new transfer students to live on campus, thus eliminating the opportunity to opt out of the residence package. In contrast, some colleges provide you with the freedom to make your pick and if you do not wish to stay on campus, you can opt out and find yourself a room elsewhere. Most universities offer student housing services that can help you find a well-priced place for yourself.

Universities also offer different meal packages, which are generally non-refundable; therefore, if you decide later to discontinue your meal deal it may not be such a wise decision. Most universities mandate it for freshmen staying on campus to purchase the meal package deals. However, if the meal packages are optional, you can consider several factors before you make your pick.

There are different packages available, offering a different number of meals, such as 10 meals per week or the more elaborate 21 meals per week. If you are staying on campus, with no time to venture out to grocery stores, the 21-meal package, which includes three daily meals, is a good choice.

Many universities offer health insurance policies that can also be opted out of. Beforehand, take stock of your situation and assess whether the plan is optional or mandatory and also if it is beneficial for you

Should you already be covered through a private insurer, you can opt out of the university plan for a small refund. You will need to fill out an “opt out” form to cancel this policy. Ensure that you do so within the allotted time given by the university.

Before you plan to opt out the various university packages, consider every possible situation to see whether it will be beneficial to you or not. Generally, if you opt out of the plan, you won’t be able to apply for the package again in that given year, so make an informed decision that best suits your requirements.

Information on opting out of various packages is available on university websites.
